Maltodextrin in Supplements: What to Avoid and What to Choose Instead (UK)

Maltodextrin in Supplements: What It Is, Why It’s Used, and Why We Leave It Out

Maltodextrin in Supplements: If you’ve ever checked the ingredients list on your supplements and spotted maltodextrin, you’re not alone — and you're right to be cautious.

It’s one of the most commonly used fillers and bulking agents in the supplement industry. But that doesn’t mean it belongs in your body.

Let’s break down what maltodextrin is, why it’s used, and why Arbor supplements are 100% free from it.

🤔 What Is Maltodextrin?

Maltodextrin is a highly processed carbohydrate derived from corn, rice, wheat, or potato starch. It’s usually in powder form, and has no flavour or nutritional value.

It’s technically a polysaccharide, but it behaves more like a sugar — in fact, it has a higher glycaemic index than table sugar, meaning it spikes blood sugar quickly.

💊 Why Is Maltodextrin Used in Supplements?

Brands often include maltodextrin as a:

  • Bulking agent – to fill out capsules or powders with low active ingredient volumes

  • Flow agent – to improve how powders move through machines

  • Stabiliser or carrier – in vitamin blends or mushroom extracts

  • Cheap filler – to make formulas look bigger or more substantial

You’ll often see it in:

  • Mushroom powders

  • Electrolyte blends

  • Protein powders

  • Generic multivitamins

  • Flavoured drink mixes and chewables

⚠️ Why You Might Want to Avoid Maltodextrin

For most people, maltodextrin is unnecessary at best, and problematic at worst.

Here’s why:

  1. Spikes blood sugar – not ideal if you’re insulin-resistant, prediabetic, or on medications like Ozempic or Mounjaro

  2. Can cause bloating or gut discomfort – especially for those with digestive sensitivities

  3. Usually GMO-derived – unless certified organic

  4. Adds nothing nutritionally – just takes up space in your capsule

❌ You Won’t Find Maltodextrin in any Arbor Formula

At Arbor, we’ve built our supplements to work with your body, not just fill capsules.

That’s why every one of our products is 100% maltodextrin-free, and always will be.

We use no fillers, no binders, no bulking agents — just clean, active ingredients in every dose.
